The above distance will allow a full throttled plane to get up to speed for a medium turn.

Use a spiraling technique to achieve maximum altitude (record it precisely with an altimeter).

If the wind is greater than 5 mph or 8 k use a back forth pattern gaining the most altitude while heading directly into the wind.

Use lots of up elevator on sharp turns which will force the plane to fly a self checking wider and safer turn.
